Which class for 4th slot?
Okay, so I only got Prophecies, and my 4th slot is open. I have made many different classes for it, but never got past Pre-Sear with them, and I need help deciding which class to go for it, like which one to stick to. So far I have a W/E, Me/Mo, and N/Me that I got in post. Which other class should I go?
[Pros/Cons] Ele: I liked the very large energy pool, the spammable skills like flare, and never really running out of energy by just staying in the 25-40 area. But I didn't like how slow they casted stuff, AOE scatter, and the glyph stuff. Was a bit confusing. Ranger: Pet, Troll Unguent, and survivability by long-range attacks was cool. But I didn't find a fricken' short bow in Pre, so the attack speed was horrible. And they have to run everywhere to get their skills, and the male character choices are horrible. -_-) Monk: Signets are cool, and some of the armor looks cool, but I don't like being the one being attacked in every small skirmish with foes (when I'm a caster, that is). Plus DF doesn't seem like that great of a attribute for a Prot/Smiter. (And I don't feel like watching health bars since I'm more of a passive healer, like fire and forget heals.) Halp? |

thats a hard one to answer.
My first character was an ele.....so I am kind of sweet on them. That said I would probably go with either the ele or the ranger. Ele: there are tons more spells out there that dont have long cast times if that is a problem for you. Ranger: lots of bows in post---lots, and having a pet as a tank for you helps mitigate damage. I wouldnt just pick my character based on only what I saw in pre, they only give you a tiny small bit of what the character is all about. and you can always play one thru to post and if you decide its not for you, delete it and make another class. (personally I have had a ton of fun with my most recent ele I made in nightfall--ele/ranger!) |

I would recommend the ranger. While they are pretty bad in pre-searing, things get much better later on.

Your comments show you have thought this out pretty well and are tending towards Ele yourself.
Ele as you say huge energy pool 100+ isnt uncommon and I have seen Ele/Monk proposed as a very effective healer just because of this fact. So Nuker/Healer/ with defensive ward capability. Very versitile class and the 60 al isnt a big handicap as you can easily boost it with spells. The Scatter is annoying but it can be minimised and aoe isnt everything you can just about kill a target with one sequence then move on rather than damaging a number. Ranger Very good armor a pet and long range attack, all good and I do play my ranger a lot. Pet very useful in the early stages but. The pet build is pretty specialised and I dont think it gets a lot of play since you need to give up a lot of your bar to pet skills just having charm and comfort isnt really enough so you will prob take 3 or 4 pet attack/defences that leaves 2 for your ranger. Monk I would love monks more if there was a much lager part of the game devoted to undead. Having your smites do double damage against undead is great when you meet them but your a pretty poor ele type without that boost. Your also the most wanted and hated class in the game. Wanted because of the myth that in pve a party cannot survive without a couple of monks and hated because when anything goes wrong its your fault. I think on balance its ele |

It does sound like you had the least amount of issues with the ele. Rangers have a niche as well as a jack of all trades kind of thing to them and based on my play history (I didn't end up loving Ranger till later) I'd call them 'advaced' -your mileage may vary-. Monks are extremely usefull, and can be exilerating to play for the challenge. Nukers aka eles are fire and forget, in most cases pure damage in PVE so if you want simple splatterific launchification these are your guys. I made and deleted a LOT of characters when I started, Ele is now my oldest one. I actually *play* my ranger and then my necro the most for fun nowadays for what it's worth.

Elementalist. Definitely. I'm not gonna butter this up for you, but they are a complex starter class. You have 4 different elemental lines, each with pros and cons. But you're right, there are one or two spells with long casting times. You're averaging around a 2 second cast time for most spells.
Glyphs are just abilities to help manage damage/energy. You can ONLY HAVE ONE GLYPH USED AT A TIME! But you can equip and use several glyphs seperately. Aoe Scatter used to be they WILL run out of all AoE spells. Now they only run at around 10% health. Snares work well to counter this, or just high damage AoE to make sure the final hit kills, like Meteor Shower. It may take you weeks to find a functional build with just experimenting. Finding a good balance of damage and energy management is good and attunements will be your best friend. Always. |

I vote for Ranger, due to the survivability of the class and the ranged attacks. Also, a pet, even with no points in BM and no other skills aside from Charm and Comfort can save your life (lock the pet on a target and take off with a speed boost).
But hey, you have a Mesmer. If you find that class easy to play (or at least not impossible), you can go with any other caster and do pretty good. |

Maybe try making some PvP only characters of those classes, that will help you get somewhat of a feeling for them. If you really want it to be a PvE char, just choose the one that you have fun with, all 3 are usually looked for in a good group.
